Sonnet 6 by George Boole (1815-1865)

To note… Mathematician, philosopher, logician, poet, first professor of mathematics at then newly formed Queen's College Cork (now University College Cork), and astonishingly self-taught for having to brilliantly develop then establish what later became known as Boolean algebra/logic.

Thou that in secret chambers dost portray
The pictures of the past, whence some return,
And some, like ashes in the buried urn,
Lie hid, not lost, till one Diviner Ray

Shall through thy inmost caverns pour the day;
Oh, Memory! If to me thy lessons stern
Sometimes appear, let me not less discern
The deep and wholesome wisdom they convey;

But when the years to vanity betrayed
Rise threat'ning from gulfs to which they fled
Give me to see in each reproachful shade

A messenger, on solemn errand sped;
`Tis not with purpose vain they they invade
The nightly pillow and the wakeful bed.

June 1849

According to Desmond MacHale, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at University College Cork, in his book The Poetry of George Boole (Oct 2020)...

"On the surface, this sonnet would appear to be a straightforward tribute to the physical and spiritual aspects of memory, but in the light of subsequent events, perhaps it has a deeper significance than even Boole himself may have been aware of. It (Sonnet 6) was written in 1949, between the publications of his two major books, The Mathematical Analysis of Logic in 1847, and The Laws of Thought in 1854. In the hands and fertile mind of Claude Shannon (1916-2001) these books led to an algebraic formulation of the operation of electronic switching circuits and eventually to the invention of the modern digital computer. Boole relates that he was blessed with an almost photographic memory which he later described in the following words:

This does not result so much from strength of memory as from the power of arrangement which provides its proper place in the mind for every fact and idea and thus enables me to find at once what I want just as you would know in a well-ordered set of drawers where to lay your hand in a moment upon any article you required.

In Sonnet 6, was Boole now thinking about the physical process of memory in the human brain, and how information is stored there, and why certain memories 'lie hid but not lost'?"

Hence the necessary prerequisites or building blocks (among others) towards the Digital/Information Age; the refinement of the binary numbering system by Leibniz, the further development of algebra/logic by Boole otherwise known as Boolean algebra/logic, the expansion of truth tables by Wittgenstein, the proliferation of logic gates then formation of the Digital Circuit Design Theory by Shannon, on shoulders and/or in collaboration of many others... Quote and Book by Claude-Frédéric Bastiat

Quote and Book by Claude-Frédéric Bastiat... See link for this and other such postings at SubStack.

Quote below taken from a book I highly recommend entitled THE LAW by Claude-Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850). Free e-book and e-collection of Bastiat’s work are courtesy of Mises Institute

“We hold from God the gift that, as far as we are concerned, contains all others, Life—physical, intellectual, and moral life.

But life cannot support itself. He who has bestowed it, has entrusted us with the care of supporting it, of developing it, and of perfecting it. To that end, He has provided us with a collection of wonderful faculties; He has plunged us into the midst of a variety of elements. It is by the application of our faculties to these elements that the phenomena of assimilation and of appropriation, by which life pursues the circle that has been assigned to it are realized.

Existence, faculties, assimilation—in other words, personality, liberty, property—this is man.

It is of these three things that it may be said, apart from all demagogic subtlety, that they are anterior and superior to all human legislation.

It is not because men have made laws, that personality, liberty, and property exist. On the contrary, it is because personality, liberty, and property exist beforehand, that men make laws. What, then, is law? As I have said elsewhere, it is the collective organization of the individual right to lawful defense.”

So it follows (to reiterate), one’s human voice certainly is not the same as God’s voice or in Latin vox humana vox dei non, nor one’s human voice the same as another’s human voice or also in Latin vox humana unius vox humana alterius non. The finiteness of humanity, nay the precise position ergo finiteness of each and every individual’s space (x,y,z) at any given moment in time (t), preempts observably, logically, consistently any conjured justification to presume to think, speak then act on behalf of God or another individual....

Vox Humana Vox Dei Non

Vox Humana Vox Dei Non... See link for my weekly article at SubStack.

As logically noted by Aristotle (384-322 BC) per the section Posterior Analytics of his work Organon…

"Now since the required ground of our knowledge---i.e. of our conviction---of a fact is the possession of such a syllogism... and the ground of the syllogism is the facts constituting its premises, we must not only know the primary premises---some if not all---beforehand, but know them better than the conclusion... So since the primary premises are the cause of our knowledge---i.e. of our conviction---it follows that we know them better---that is, are more convinced of them---than their consequences, precisely our knowledge of the latter is the effect of our knowledge of the premises."

Mere conclusions (i.e. outcomes) are the priorities of the 21st century mind, often to the exclusion of the laborious, arduous yet necessary process(es) of premises, observations, evidences, tests, determinations, propositions, syllogisms (logic), consistencies, ethics and more. Consequently, the adult mind remains entirely adolescent, far too deficient to exercise any meaningful analysis particularly complex as well regularly simplistic even commonly routine....

The following will probably be included upon further editing, and front cover a slightly modified yet appropriate version of the 10th and 11th books...

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 275

~ Various Final Thoughts ~

Poetry is harmonious utilization of thought and language as much as logic the science of sciences, thus empirical considerations, methodical categorizations, analytical comparisons then logical conclusions inevitably lending towards observable constancies, practical consistencies, applicable ethics or moralities, as well beautiful even astonishing poetics.

With that said, consider the below quote taken from the work Sic Et Non by Peter Abelard (1079-1142), as diligently stated by the philosopher, logician, theologian, teacher, musician, composer, and poet.

Constant and frequent questioning is the first key to wisdom... For through doubting we are led to inquire, and by inquiry we perceive the truth.

Questioning and doubting observably, logically, ethically oppose the fool's drone-like acceptance of science, fact, truth or common good as though "in" or "settled", foregone conclusively as often promulgated by empowered institutions whether the 16th century Catholic Church, 17th century Puritan Massachusetts, 18th century British Empire, 20th century Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Communist Russia as well 20th/21st century Centralist, Crony-Corporatist therefore Anti-Individualist, Anti-Capitalist America.

Instead, the pursuit of knowledge, logic, consistency, ethic, truth, discernment, wisdom comes only by ceaseless study, endless ponder, tireless labor until one's last breath. The same ends pursued by lesser effort leads unavoidably, inevitably to ignorance, illogic, inconsistency, immorality, falsity, dullness and foolishness.

Furthermore as such, these are unavoidable dynamics or as some would call it, natural laws. Success is not guaranteed but only possible per our willingness to fail upon our willingness to labor. Likewise, to do right or to be moral is best determined per our willingness to bear fully our own responsibilities and risks, while constantly respecting, consistently regarding each and every person's singular human right to consent or dissent on all matters. Do this not, then success impossible thus failure ensued while immorality ensured.

As already mentioned else implied in various statements, all politics are discussions then implementations disguised by convenient, expedient and/or benevolent terms, intellectualized as intriguing, alluring, endearing even titillating isms, however achieved by the sufficient gathering and colluding of the consented so to coerce the dissented. Imperatively as well axiomatically the moral burden of proof rests on those who embrace their preferred form of politics as something other than first covetousness followed by presumption then arrogance and finally violence manifested as nothing more than force arbitrarily legalized.

And finally, it must be stated once again. There is one morality, one ethic, one right, one ism (see Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 274), consequently all other moralities, all other ethics, all other rights, all other isms must first be mutually, unanimously consented hence the regard for the Singular Human Right to Consent or Dissent on all matters, as determined and manifested by the Peculiar Human Ability to Reason, else the entire affair immoral, unethical even inhumane if forcefully imposed.

And so it goes per cigarette pouts, martini slurs o'er high-heel stirs
Seasoned terse withal usual curse, twice recited, thrice liken verse
Mid cornet and saxophone blown, blue and mauve notes so moaned
Heaving as bosom-tones, ear-suckled by hungry souls, each alone

Each lonely in self-made worlds, as perpetuated inwardly towards
Moralized narcissism, benevolent selfishness per the lowing discords
Centering on lack of observation, analysis, determination along logic
So, inconsistencies, complexities aft’ covetous urges as noble politics

"The climax of the Ten Commandments is the Tenth Commandment – 'Thou shat not covet' – Actually we break this last commandment, not to covet, before we break any of the others. Any time that we break one of the other commandments of God, it means that we have already broken this commandment, in coveting."

Quote taken from his 1971 book True Spirituality… As much I contend observably, logically, consistently the singular human right to Consent or Dissent on ALL matters (per 10th and 11th books, and book forthcoming), likewise I contend observably, logically, consistently the singular human adversary even archfoe (if you will) of such right as Covetousness oft morphing into Presumption then soon Arrogance. I owe in part my understanding of the latter to studying, pondering, laboring over the book’s 1st chapter.

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 274

~ Inveterate Covetousness Theorem / Part 3 ~

Appropriately, the Inveterate Covetousness Theorem could very well be expanded and/or renamed as the Common Perversion Theorem or simply Perversionism. For the two quite tightly interlaced perhaps synonymously interchangeable hence incestuously intertwined, consequently to state and enumerate redundantly; Covetousness then Perversion.

To define once again, the following two isms restated per installments prior as duly noted.

Perversionism (see Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 265); to consent or dissent on all matters per his/her preference, yet remain discontented, disconcerted even disturbed until others act, speak even think compatibly, similarly by force legal or illegal thus force governmental, social or personal. It is critical to include in consideration and understanding the word and sentiment covetousness (Proposition, Problem & Poem Nos. 231-235, 245, 246) as the indisputable perquisite to such perversion (see Proem & Poem Nos. 135, 154, 190 and Proposition, Problem & Poem Nos. 247, 265).

Individualism (see Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 263); the constant respect hence consistent regard for each and every person's Peculiar Human Ability to Reason as manifested per the Singular Human Right to Consent or Dissent on all matters. Without exemption or exception (see Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 247), all considerations must rest upon the aforesaid, else the unethical dilemma remaining unjustifiable ergo unresolvable till resumed and revered the one ethos and creed (see Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 250) as determined then established since humanity first reasoned.

At core (incurably rotten) of all organized coercions, that is to say, all politics therefore all political isms, all social isms, all economic isms (including capitalism as popularly tho’ incorrectly used and abused since 1913), all governmental systems (thus any-ocracy), all partisan platforms (thus any plank), all socio-political movements (thus any reform), is of course Perversionism at stark odds against the sole ism logical, ethical, rightful hence Individualism. It should be quite unnecessary to note then warn; Perversionism stands ever readied covetously, presumptuously, arrogantly to forcefully constrain, violently reduce or inhumanely eliminate Individualism.

The contention always exists at this juncture, for by the two aforesaid definitions one’s emotionally embraced polities and sentimentally endeared moralities are logically challenged even ethically condemned, thus the often inimical response even hysterical rejection of the same.

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 273

~ William Thomson and Hobbes' Unresistible Might ~

Adequate notions are those in which, besides enumerating the marks, we can explain them; that is, can enumerate the marks of the marks of the distinct notions, and again the marks of those marks… So we have an adequate notion of what Hobbes means by Rights, when we not only know it is “unresistible might in a state of nature,” but can explain what unresistible might and state of nature are.

William Thomson, Archbishop of York (1819-1890)

As taken from his 1842 book An Outline of the Necessary Laws of Thought: A Treatise on Pure and Applied Logic, thus interestingly to note the applicably quoted phrase unresistible might per Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679).

For who neither observes nor concludes his/her own persistence then insistence towards the singular human right to consent or dissent on all matters, whether to then allow else deny the exercise of the same with much diligence and determination?

For who neither observes nor concludes others’ persistence then insistence towards the singular human right to consent or dissent on all matters, whether to then allow else deny the exercise of the same with much diligence and determination?

The master of a plantation, the tyrant of a kingdom, the dictator of a regime, as well the prime minister of a parliamentary government, even the president of a democratic republic, all without exception are fully aware of their own and others’ persistence then insistence towards the singular human right to consent or dissent on all matters, while covetously deliberating, presumptuously disrespecting, arrogantly disregarding then forcefully disallowing the same for any and all. For the very use of force so to disallow others therefore legislate, regulate, prohibit, ban, sanction, mandate, order, tax (then provide, subsidize, grant, etc.), confiscate, intervene, prevent, intrude, impose, monitor, spy as well invade, occupy, destroy, annihilate others, confirms the enforcer’s recognition of such persistence, insistence thus potential resistance upon the singular right and unresistible might.

So it follows, regardless the political rhetoric and/or social admonition, human actions inevitably reveal the covetous expectation hence presumptuous intention, regularly cloaked by the Golden Rule per some contorted version then sorted perversion thereof, while generally ignored the Silver Rule per some distorted convenience then consorted expedience.

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 272

~ William Thomson and Plato’s Forms / Reprise ~

Remember then, that I directed you not to teach me some one or two holy acts out of many, but that very form by which all holy acts are holy… Teach me, then, the nature of that form itself, that looking to it and using it for our example, I may declare any of the actions of yourself or any other, which partakes of this nature, to be holy, and any not so partaking, not to be holy.

So eloquently stated Plato (428-347 BC) per his Euthyphro 6, as footnoted by William Thomson, Archbishop of York (1819-1890) in his 1842 book An Outline of the Necessary Laws of Thought: A Treatise on Pure and Applied Logic.

May the mind diligently pursue moral understanding, to seek not lists of acts, behaviors, postures, nor seek to enumerate bills or articles of rights whether human or constitutional, instead seek to deliberate then determine observably, logically, consistently therefore ethically. In so doing, critically reducing lists, bills, articles of pluralities to a principle, morality, ethic, right of singularity by which all things are judged then condemned else justified.

If seeking to enumerate formally or informally two or more holy acts of many, if depending on the same holy acts, moralities, rights, ethics and/or rights to moderate either society or oneself, then ensured are various arbitraries, complexities thus inconsistencies as well contradictions, hypocrisies, confutations, discrepancies even conflicts, brutalities and more. For without an observable, logical, consistent therefore singular principle as the universal determinant, then inevitably arbitrary any list, bill, article of compiled holy acts, moralities, rights, ethics and/or rights.

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 271

~ William Thomson and Plato’s Forms ~

Forms (laws, theories) have triple mode of existence; they exist in the Divine Mind as ideas, and are the archetypes of creation; they exist as embodied in "instances" or examples, in which mode they are laws; they exist, lastly, in the human mind as ideas; thus they precede creation, they are in it, they succeed it.

William Thomson, Archbishop of York (1819-1890)

Taken from his 1842 book An Outline of the Necessary Laws of Thought: A Treatise on Pure and Applied Logic, the statement indicates three modes, yet one implied albeit paramount; preexistence then persistence of principle.

To expected of course the following retort. What principle? He speaks of mode or process. However, the logical counter would be the reiteration of the same mode(s) or process(es) as the very basis of principle if not morality or ethic. Accordingly it has been numerously, variously agued in this and last two books, the mere existence of the peculiar human ability of reason demands an ethical consideration and posture, while the significant distinction among all other species by the same human peculiarity demands a moral outcry if intervened, interfered, imposed, interrupted, inhibited, intruded or invaded.

If observably, logically, consistently accepted the peculiar human ability to reason as undeniable, unavoidable indication towards a singular principle fundamental, moral, ethical, it greatly challenges the common view hence preference for such in plural forms; lists of moralities, bills of rights, tablets of commandments, volumes of ethics, books of admonitions/proverbs, and other inconsistencies thus complexities. For the aforesaid common view hence preference have historically facilitated innumerable depravities therefore atrocities, monstrosities, inhumanities levied upon the singular human right to consent or dissent on all matters, as manifested per the peculiar human ability to reason.

The same facilitation prevails today for the perceived good intention or imagined common good hobbles the discernment, befuddles the judgment, misdirects the conclusion while enlivens the self-righteousness.

Upon the lush emerald hill she lays, then oddly slumbers in saunters

O the mysteries as Love’s epistles and individuals’ logical passions

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 270

~ Amiss the Peculiar Human Ability to Reason / 2nd Reprise ~

Do you think people today have good sense and judgment about practical matters? So inquired an informal survey to elicit public discussion, and as part of that discussion this poet retorted.

Every individual have the unique or peculiar human ability to reason, well utilized each passing moment. That is to say, reasoning utilized appropriately as so long the individual bears fully his/her own responsibility and risk. That is to say differently, there is never a passing moment when an individual is not reasoning, therefore reasoning constantly.

Therefore, grossly oxymoronic to suggest a person, as member of the specie human, is unreasonable. For to reason is human (see Proems & Poems Nos. 22-24, 33, 34), else to be human is to reason. Inconsequential thus quite different the matter whether the person's action or behavior are constructive versus destructive.

If the individual is not fully bearing his/her own responsibility and risk per assistance or intervention by others (parents, charities, etc) or by government (welfare, subsidies, grants, loans, prohibitions, regulations, monetary expansion, etc), hence responsibility and risk mitigated else negated, then the individual ability to reason becomes misdirected, distorted, corrupted even perverted, in parallel to inciting covetousness towards presumption and arrogance for more of the same.

To logically, consistently define, to reason is the ability to economize, prioritize thus determine per propensity, prerogative, preference, necessity, pursuit, objective upon knowledge or information gathered by experience directly (life lived) or experience indirectly (reading, studying, etc).

Question neo-truths, hoary lies, either oft connived then derived
Attired withal bane, polity then gains per the contrived as strived
Slurred verses for blurred curses o’er private purses then purposed
Covetousness fitly stirs as the public booty disperses as rehearsed

Upon the lush emerald hill she lays, then oddly slumbers in saunters
Ponders `tween maunders, liken ancient sages amid tombs and altars
O the mysteries as Love’s epistles and individuals’ logical passions
Numerous while exclusive to each and every person’s sacred bastion

12th Book on Ability to Reason, Right to Consent; Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 269

Most likely to be published later this summer of 2022, my 12th book entitled appropriately; Propositions, Problems & Poems on the Peculiar Human ABILITY to REASON, Singular Human RIGHT to CONSENT & Other Neglected Matters. The following will probably be included upon further editing, and front cover a slightly modified yet appropriate version of the 10th and 11th books...

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 269

~ Amiss the Peculiar Human Ability to Reason / 1st Reprise ~

To expand further, well intertwined are the peculiar human ability to reason and self-interest, so much so, quite easily and universally observed, logically determined then properly argued as synonymous else inseparable. To quote from her 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand (1905-1982) wrote per the inherent passion thereof.

I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.

As starkly cold some may interpret this quote, equally thus unavoidably practiced by each and every individual since the specie human first reasoned, the one point in history and forward shared by both the Evolutionist and Creationist (see Proem & Poem No. 199 and Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 267). From here, it follows.

Firstly, best exemplified the beauty of self-interest respected thus regarded per modest governance, when individuals separately calculate, speculate, labor and produce, then in the marketplace of mutual consent, not taxed, regulated, subsidized, prohibited, sanctioned, confiscated nor seized, negotiate and exchange their goods and services, all proportionately satisfied even benefited.

No one actor empowered politically, governmentally enough to interfere, intrude, impose per inherently unavoidable biases and prejudices covetously driven, yet properly moderated each individual by fully bearing his/her responsibility and risk, therefore appropriately guided every person by wholly exercising his/her peculiar human ability to reason for resultantly not awry, askew nor amiss.

Conversely, best exemplified the ugliness of self-interest disrespected thus disregarded per arrogant governance, when individuals separately calculate, speculate, labor and produce, then in the marketplace of covetous presumption, well taxed, regulated, subsidized, prohibited, sanctioned, confiscated or seized, adjust and transact their goods and services, all disproportionately unsatisfied even harmed.

One or more actors empowered politically, governmentally enough to interfere, intrude, impose per inherently unavoidable biases and prejudices covetously driven, yet improperly moderated each individual by not fully bearing his/her responsibility and risk, therefore inappropriately guided every person by not wholly exercising his/her peculiar human ability to reason for resultantly quite awry, askew nor amiss.

O the covetousness, presumption and the inevitable violence
Hyping as rights others’ possessions, nonesuch the vehemence
Insomuch the fraudulence, so preceding the deceitful polyanthus
Such savoring fragrance for minds susceptible then superfluous

Question neo-truths, hoary lies, either oft connived then derived
Attired withal bane, polity then gains per the contrived as strived
Slurred verses for blurred curses o’er private purses then purposed
Covetousness fitly stirs as the public booty disperses as rehearsed

12th Book on Ability to Reason, Right to Consent; Proposition, Problem & Poem No. 268

PROPOSITION, PROBLEM & POEM No. 268

~ Amiss the Peculiar Human Ability to Reason ~

If not hindered nor impaired then awry, askew, amiss the peculiar human ability to reason upon the mitigation or negation of the individual’s burden of responsibility and risk. There are of course the observable, logical therefore sustainable as well ethical considerations (see Proem & Poem Nos. 117-120, 123), as so previously introduced.

Each and every action carries with it the inherent thus unavoidable burden of responsibility and risk, defining since antiquity the natural state of human activity. First, the actor bears the responsibility thus cost of the action by exerting labor and/or expending resource. Second, the actor bears the risk thus outcome of the action by enjoying the increment and/or enduring the detriment.

However on the actor’s behalf, another person may bear responsibility and/or risk, voluntarily if have consented thus acceptant, or coercively if have dissented thus resistant, albeit never negating nor mitigating rather merely transferring the burden. With that said and to state the obvious, it is intellectual whimsy, fantasy even psychosis to contemplate society or human activity without individual burden of responsibility and risk…

It is not difficult to imagine by resorting to force the newly induced overhead thus expenditure of labor and resource, in addition to the moral dilemma per the disregard for the Singular Human Right to Consent or Not Consent on all matters, inseparably the disrespect for the Peculiar Human Ability to Reason.

The implication should be made plain. While the forceful transferring of one’s responsibility and risk to another may present obvious dilemmas making difficult if not impossible to maintain postures logical, sustainable, ethical however less noticed the less obvious dilemmas per the peculiar human ability or capacity to reason ill effected. It is also obvious hence quite true the path of least resistance equation as the propensity of reasoning, properly conducted when fully bearing one’s responsibility and risk, however gravely conducted when not fully bearing one’s responsibility and risk.

Ah, arrogance’s drones hail and prevail on confiscated air
`Hind subsidized podiums too, thus breastplate’d the au pairs
Shielding the covetous glares, the shroud as cloak tent-flaps
Upon socio-rapes across politic-scapes, the fondest of traps

O the covetousness, presumption and the inevitable violence
Hyping as rights others’ possessions, nonesuch the vehemence
Insomuch the fraudulence, so preceding the deceitful polyanthus
Such savoring fragrance for minds susceptible then superfluous
